Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe
La Crosse, Wisconsin
Pilgrimage to a Sacred Place
“A pilgrimage to a holy place uncovers for us the extraordinary nature of our ordinary life.”
“The initial inspiration for the Shrine was a response to a situation which I saw in the Diocese of La Crosse, first as priest, and then as bishop. The situation is a hunger to known God and to love Him, a hunger to which Our Blessed Mother responds in a particular way, leading us to the only place where that hunger can be satisfied.”
Cardinal Burke
The Saint Juan Diego Retreat House
The mission of the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe is to bring the love of Our Lord Jesus Christ through the Blessed Virgin Mary’s care to all who need rest and renewal. Allow us to strengthen that mission will be the success of building a new retreat center.
Building a Retreat House
The Saint Juan Diego Retreat House will serve as home to pilgrims who come to the Shrine for prayer, devotion, and spiritual growth. It will be a two-story, 19,925 square foot structure, offering 38 rooms for pilgrims, and providing opportunities not only for extended retreat activities and conferences, but also a place for pilgrims to stay over-night and on-site.
Building a new retreat center can be accomplished with God’s grace working through generous Shrine pilgrims and benefactors.

Leading Pilgrims Closer to Christ
Since the consecration of the Shrine Church in 2008, our best year approached 81,000 pilgrims. In 2020, with 10 months affected by the response to COVID, 65,000 pilgrims still came to the Shrine, which, given the context, is remarkable! Last year, 2021 was a banner year. Over 86,000 pilgrims came to the Shrine from great distances to receive the Sacraments and to pray before the tabernacle and the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
